Hobbits are known for two things. Their love for peace. And their huge appetite. They live for food. They work for food. They breathe food, and they die food. Their daily meal schedule looks like this:
7:00am – Breakfast
9:00am – Second Breakfast
11:00am – Elevenses
1:00pm – Luncheon
4:00pm – Afternoon Tea
6:00pm – Dinner
8:00pm – Supper
The Hobbits go on a journey with to destroy a ring that holds too much power. As the book goes on, you can see how food is such an integral part of their society. They rely on food as the glue that holds them together. It helps create a bond between them, and the other "species" they are traveling with (humans, wizards, dwarves, elves) and it helps them get through some of the most difficult times they face on their journey.
One Hobbit in particular goes on a journey with a group of dwarves who want to reclaim their homeland and while they're on the journey, food yet again "comes to the rescue." It helps bridge the gaps and differences each species has and helps them reach their destination in the end.
