Johann Georg Seitz was a German -Austrian painter in the mid and late 1800's. He focuses on still-life art that has flowers and fruits in his paintings. Many other artists besides Seitz center their art inspiration around fruits as well. When we think of food in art, we often think of photography of food, photogenic food, fancy displays of food, or presentations that makes a dish look good. We often neglect the fact that food itself is an art in every country. Nowadays, we can even buy bouquets of fruit or gift baskets of fruit as a gift. During the Renaissance, Giuseppe Arcimboldo, a painter for the Habsburg court in Vienna, and later, for the Royal Court in Prague, painted whimsical puzzle-like portraits in which facial features were composed of fruits, vegetables, and flowers.

In most countries, food in art is a demonstration or portrayal of pride and culture. In the 1600s, such paintings attested to the owners’ wealth and intellectual engagement. The foods depicted had symbolic significance often related to biblical texts, and how the objects were arranged—and which had been consumed— conveyed a message about the fleeting nature of time or the need for temperance.
