Motley is known as a master color-er, a radical interpreter of urban culture, and so modern he's contemporary. This is his second canvas exploring this theme, his first was painted in 1934, also titled 'Barbecue'. In this painting is a large, smiling man standing in front of a smoking grill, surrounded by an array of people dining, dancing, drinking, and having a good time. It's obvious a party is going on due to the variety and amount of people, along with the drinks and the food; but this painting also gives a sense of community.
