Food for the body
I know of men, who do not have enough, Lacking food and drink, their life is rough Day in, day out they struggle for food There is no time for any other good Food for the ego I know of men who have enough food and drink So they have time for something else to think Their egos are hungry for money, power and fame Getting more, being restless, an endless game Food for the soul I know of men who are contented with how they live They focus on soul and never cease to give To give love and support, perform acts randomly kind They are the ones who have at any time peace of mind - Aufie Zophy |
For my literature piece I choose Aufie Zophy´s beautiful poem Food for the Soul because I absolutely think that it portrays the notion that everyone needs food to survive, and while some do not have any, and other have a vast amount but neglect to help others, there are those who see food as being part of the soul, and thus, they ¨never cease to give. ¨ When Zophy writes that there are three types of food; the one for the body, the one for the ego, and the one for the soul, she set out a stage in which the amount of food you have and give, is reflective of your nature as human. When she writes that there are ¨men, who do not have enough, / Lacking food and drink, their life is rough / Day in, day out they struggle for food ¨ the idea is that life is a gamble and while some are born with plenty, there are those who don’t have enough to buy the most essential good of them all- food. I think that Zophy contrasts the men who do not have enough to the men who do, because she wants to epitomize the notion that while food in its essence is for the body, meaning to survive, some utilize it as a symbol of grandeur, ¨for the ego¨, which then reflects the idea that they have so much that ¨ Their egos are hungry for money, power and fame/ Getting more, being restless, an endless game. ¨
In other words, some men have so much food, that their priorities shift to more material things which are not for the purposes of survival, but the opposite, excess. The idea that some men have so much that life becomes an endless game of wanting more instead of giving more is an interesting one. However, the beauty of this poem is truly depicted in the last section because here Zophy expresses her view that there is hope for humanity because even though men tend to be selfish and take more than they give, there are some who ¨are contended with how they live¨ and as such ¨they focus on soul and never cease to give. ¨ Furthermore, these men that give more because they get rich through the soul not through material things can be seen when Zophy writes: ¨To give love and support, perform acts randomly kind/ They are the ones who have at any time peace of mind. ¨ Here one notices how peace of mind which is as related to the nature of any human being is determined by the amount of good that one does. All in all, I think that this piece is majestic because it beautifully portrays the idea that we as human must give rather than take because that is where peace of mind is truly found, and this leads to a true state of happiness. Is not the food itself, is the actions that can be done with food that truly matter.
