For Pop Cultures I choose a Venezuelan band called Rawayana and their song High because although the video may not be full of food images, the lyrics touch upon Venezuelan food culture. For the purposes of this writing I will translate some of the section which I think beautifully portray the Venezuelan culture & specially the influence that the national food has upon our ways of life. This modern reggae track which is a mix of rap and pop rock, set the stage for amazing lyrics rooted in the notion that ¨ there is no prejudice here¨ which basically depicts that in Venezuela their are no social issues such as racism, homophobia, and xenophobia. After this line, around the 1st quarter of the song, the rapper called Apache who views himself as the ¨champion of the flow ¨ says ¨ Forget the bad things and put your hand up high ¨ which symbolizes that although the struggle is real, hope and change is a state of mind, and by raising your hands you liberate yourself from the worries of stagnation, which then allow you to focus on other things. In relation to food, the first and most memorable part of the song which depicts the Venezuelan pop culture is when Apache raps ¨ Prepare the Tisana ¨ which in Venezuela is a cup of mixed fruits, usually, watermelon, melon, grapes, and apples topped with sweet condensed milk. The beauty of this part of the song is that it brings many memories to every Venezuelan because in this country almost always, when the youth leave school they go and buy a tisana. Prior to the current dictatorship the tisana was was probably the national healthy desert, however, now it symbolizes what we once had and now do not because fruits are for rich people, as no poor, nor middle class individual can afford such a luxury. Following this, Rawayana sings about ¨ the mons that everyday cook arepas for their crias¨, which emphasizes that the back bone of Venezuela is the mothers that work tirelessly day in and day out with the sole purpose of coming home and cooking for the youth of the neighborhood. Here this messege touches again on the idea that Venezuela is a country of hard working people who devote themselves to each other regardless of the struggles that each individual faces. Having said that, I love this song because it portrays the beauty of my country and my people.
