What do I think about when I think about food? Unfortunately for my figure, I think about food quite a lot. I renew my faith for the future of humanity every time I eat a really good meal, which I’ll admit is pretty often. But food is not just something we prepare and eat. Food has always been a focal point in media. In utilizing food in artwork, the messages conveyed are universal because no matter where or when you live, you recognize and appreciate food.
I fell in love with Banksy after discovering a print at an art sale on the University of Houston campus my Freshman year. I instantly connected with the graffiti for its political commentary on humans and the current state of the world. Banksy, an unidentified street artist, utilizes dark imagery to convey their negative opinions on society. Upon discovering their work in 2013, I took it upon myself to explore the world of Banksy’s art and came across the Caveman piece.
Caveman with fast food, pictured above, was completed in Los Angeles in the mid-2000s, most likely 2007. While seen as vandalism, Banksy’s work is celebrated for it blend of modernism with prehistoric. The fast food makes the audience consider the origin of our species and how we live today. Juxtaposition of the two time periods calls the present into question because one is forced to examine the transformation of humans. Food is a constant throughout time, so in utilizing it in artwork makes the image universal in message.
Unfortunately, I have yet to see a work by Banksy in person. But by the end of 2018, I have set the personal goal to see some of his works. But in my 2018 vacation to California, I hope to visit several of Banksy's pieces, including Caveman with fast food.
