Food frequently appears in classic literature such as Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Nineteenth century Victorian society mealtimes were highly ritualistic and rule bound. Carroll deliberately broke almost all of these rules in his book. During the Mad Hatter’s tea party the dormouse was asleep at the table, most of the guests’ elbows were resting on the table, guests were crowded in one corner of the table, the Hatter and Hare where shouting while eating, and Alice sits down at the table uninvited. The very fabric of Victorian society is being torn apart in this tea party. Carroll understood that dining etiquette is of great importance in Victorian identity, thus he broke these rules in his book to emphasize the unusual world Alice that visits.
