Recently I discovered Buzz Feed’s newest video series which compares and rates food choices or experiences based on their price points . For example, a $8 dollar buffet versus a $95 dollar buffet or a $5 pizza versus $45 dollar pizza. As Americans, we are very fortunate to have access to all sorts of food in a range of price points and from different sources. Even when it comes to food, America truly is the land of opportunity. Very opposite from the symbolism of food in Arcimboldo’s painting, food in this pop-culture segment is a commodity and seen more of as an experience to be gained rather than a necessity.Food is depicted as being a part of a higher tier than a basic one in Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. This segment shows that food fulfills a sense of curiosity and even a status symbol for all who can afford consuming gold and other decadent ingredients once only available to royalty. Food is at the focal point of the segment but it has a greater purpose than simply acting as sustenance.
These videos answer one of my many life questions for me- why would anyone pay X amount for something. Because somehow, the experience and quality justifies the spend. I can't say I would shell out the same amount of money but shows like this help to be more selective about food choices.
