Food in Art

For food in art I decided to look around my house for any art paintings that contained any aspect of food in them. In doing so I ran across the last supper painting in my parents formal dining room area. Immediately I knew this was a perfect example of food in art because this is one of the most symbolic paintings ever made. With that said it contained many aspects of food which all symbolize something. In this painting, Jesus was sensing his imminent arrest, had a last meal with his friends. He predicted his betrayal and death, and described how Peter and Judas would fail him. Then he asked the disciples to remember him whenever they celebrated a similar meal. This event is referred to as the Last Supper. Now the context of food is present in the sense of identity. I believe that identity is present because culture and religion are tied into this painting.
Foods such as bread and wine were present at the Last Supper. Jesus is said to have passed both around the table, telling his Apostles that the bread was his body and the wine was his blood. This is the scriptural origin of communion. Jesus also instructs the Apostles to make preparations for the Passover, including sacrificing and preparing the Passover Lamb. The "lamb" is actually a symbol for Jesus, who the next day would become the sacrificial "Lamb of God." Another aspect of food that is relevant is the spilled salt before Judas has been said to represent his betrayal, or alternately, is seen as a sign of his bad luck in being the one chosen to betray. The fish served has conflicted readings. If it is meant to be eel, it might represent indoctrination and thereby faith in Jesus. However, if it's herring, then it could symbolize a nonbeliever who denies religion.
